Cordless Table Lamps: Battery Life, Charging, and Placement
A cordless lamp gives you more freedom to place light, along with a new routine: bringing it back to charge. Choose around where you will use it, how you will power it and the information the exact model actually provides.

Start with the place you want to light
Name the situation where a cable gets in the way: a dining table, a console without a nearby outlet or a reading spot you occasionally rearrange. Then check how much light that activity needs and how much surface area the lamp can use. Portability is useful when it solves a specific placement problem.
Think about what you will do with the lamp between uses. Will it return to the same shelf, move between rooms or remain in one place most of the time? A design that is convenient to carry may suit one routine, while a lamp with a familiar control and a fixed charging spot may suit another.
Read runtime claims with their conditions
Look for the brightness setting and operating conditions attached to a runtime figure. A claim described as up to a certain number of hours does not tell you how long the lamp will run at the setting you prefer. If several modes are listed, check whether their runtimes are listed separately.
Compare like with like. A maximum-duration figure for one lamp is not a useful counterpart to a full-brightness figure for another. If the conditions are absent, record the runtime as unconfirmed for your use. Do not calculate a promised duration from the battery-capacity number alone or turn an ambiguous listing into a precise claim.
Check the whole charging arrangement
Identify the lamp's charging connector, the required power supply and what is included in the package. A photograph of a cable does not establish that the wall adapter is supplied. A familiar connector shape alone does not confirm which charging arrangement the manufacturer specifies.
Follow the instructions for the exact model and use the specified charging equipment. Before choosing, check whether the lamp can be used while charging if that matters to your routine. Do not assume a feature because another rechargeable lamp has it. A USB input for the lamp is also different from an output intended to charge a phone.
Match the permitted use to the setting
Keep portable and suitable for your setting as separate questions. Check the exact model's instructions for the environment where you plan to use it. For a patio, bathroom or other location with exposure to moisture, look for explicit permitted-use information rather than relying on a lifestyle photograph.
The same care applies to the surface and placement. Check that the base fits, the controls are accessible and the lamp can be positioned as instructed. If a listing uses a broad label such as outdoor without explaining the conditions, keep that question open until the manufacturer provides a clear answer.
Choose controls that suit the way you move it
Imagine carrying the lamp to its usual position and turning it on with the objects that will already be on the table. Is the control obvious? Can you adjust the light without moving the lamp? If you plan to place it on a shelf, consider whether the control remains reachable there.
Decide where charging will happen before the lamp arrives. Keep that location practical for the charging instructions and your daily routine. If a dock or special cable is required, check how replacements are obtained. A convenient return-to-charge habit can be more useful than a feature you rarely use.
Keep the unanswered questions visible
Use a short comparison list: dimensions, weight if supplied, controls, charging input, included equipment and runtime with stated conditions. Add the color or finish and the number of lamps in the package. Similar-looking listings may refer to different variants or pack sizes.
Check the manufacturer's battery service or replacement information if long-term ownership matters to you. Missing information should remain missing in your comparison. Choose the model whose documented setup fits your intended use rather than giving the most optimistic interpretation to an incomplete description.
Before you choose: a quick checklist
- Identify the exact variant and number of lamps supplied.
- Compare runtime only with its stated brightness conditions.
- Check the charging input, required supply and included equipment.
- Confirm permitted use for your intended location.
- Plan where the lamp will return to charge.
